Representation Questions

Nikki Minaj is being represented.

She is being sexually represented due to her use of costume being unzipped revealing cleavage.

It is the genre of beauty magazine.

The audience accepts this image due to the history of beauty magazines that are more revealing.

The foreground areas are the parts in yellow like her hair and skin and some text the background areas are the parts in black which blend in with the background of the magazine.

It is made majority for men or a lesbian as they are the only ones would want to see “Minaj Unzipped”.

The representation doesn’t mean much to me as I don’t have an Interest I. “Minaj unzipped” and im not looking at any of the beauty tips in the magazine.

  1. 2) Good code used however, you could have went into more detail or shown multiple codes e.g. Her confidence, and how she is rebellious and stylish.

    3) The genre is a fashion and lifestyle magazine.

    4) The whole concept is that she is being 'exposed', the word "unzipped" shows this. Try to include media terminology such as, Anchorage - Text that is used to pin down the meaning of the image e.g. Unzipped pins down the idea that she is being exposed.

    5) Nicki Minaj and her body is being foregrounded, but also the cover lines e.g. "Best Beauty Guide". You have to add a connection and what is being implied through the use of whats in the foreground and background.

    6) Minaj is a huge rapper however, the only thing missing is the links towards her music career as they try to focus on her image and beauty e.g. the target audience for Elle will be older than Nicki Minaj's.

    7) It could be the fashion industries representation depiction of Minaj so that it will appeal more towards fashion than Minaj's music audience.

    9) Targeted at women interested in fashion around ages 18-28, primarily for caucasian and african American audiences.

    10) Individual answer e.g. Gives expert tips. This is mainly how you interpret this representation.

    11) Some will see it as an objectifying image. However, Minaj's fans will say it fits her style and personality. Also, they also have to be seen as 'sexy' for representation.
These are hypothetical views and how other target groups may interpret the representation of Minaj.
