Eye-line match is when we see the women playing the piano look at the puppet police fighting the puppet black males and we are then shown the fighting after we see a reaction shot which captures her reaction to the violence which we could infer as in shock due to her gobsmacked facial expression and sort of trying to avoid the violence by going into a sort of ducking position which connotes fear towards the violence and she would be gobsmacked because she appears privileged due to her expensive looking costume and wouldn't be used to violence because of her privileges. Riptide - Narrative Codes and Conventions

1.       Are there any elements of coherence in the narrative? (Potential theories/ideas to use: Todorov and Postmodernism)  The music video shows no coherence in the narrative and doesn't relate to Todorov's theory due there being no clear narative and things like the setting is left a mystery and scenes have no sort of relation at all which relates to having a disjointed narrative the idea of thing being left in simulation (make belief)  2.       What ‘message’ does the video contains? Refer to Barthes in your notes. The video contains the message of the pressure of women suffering from relationships or society as the left hand man lyric are presented with male hands doing aggressive moments like cutting and pulling and when we are shown the woman hand during the same lyric we are presented with her self harming herself which is a metaphor of self abuse due to rebellion and prolonged pressure. Judith Butler's Theory On gender Performanity: Gender is the repeated stylisation of the body a set of repeated acts with a highly rigid regulatory frame that congeal overtime to produce the appearance of substance. Butler argues that gender roles are constructed by society and that masculinity and femininity are not inherent. Gender is the cultural meaning we attach to our biological sex. which isn't alway true as there is evidence of girls like sports and boys liking make up, it is just that culture coerces you to conduct that gender performance. According to Butler gender is performative, we are not just acting it like a performance, but rather actively constructing it as we act it out. Gender reality is performative which means, quite simply that it is real only to the extent that it is performed. if we refuse to perform our gender script, gender will cease to exist.
