Steve Neale Genre Theory:

  • The idea that genres a run by repetition, but are also marked by difference, variation and change. 
  • Genres change as they borrow from other genre and overlap from each other.
  • The idea than genres list within specific economic, institutional and industrial contexts.
Indie folk music video:

Differences: 
  • Include kids in the video for the Lumineers and Bon Iver 
  • Area of change is shown in Only love as it is performance and concept based as it has clips of the actor performing. 
  • Not a native or performance based video. 
Similarities: 

  • Natural lighting 
  • Outside setting
  • Use of Montague
  • Include shots of the outdoors 
  • Has an adventurous theme

Is Riptide Postmodern?

Is Riptide Postmodern? The use of the smeared makeup on the actor who is performing the song riptide in some clips helps exaggerate postmodernism as it makes the music video a parody of jazz music which tends to have that sort of microphone and we know jazz to have been through struggle, we are majorly used to seeing the performer in their best form looking their best while performing, however the smeared makeup gives off a comic effect to the audience leaving them confused and unsure of what has gone on with the actors face.  The use of the scene of them shooting a music video helps exaggerate postmodernism as it refers to self reflexivity this is shown as it is unusual to have a music video being shot inside a music video and the whip pan of the woman and the man and her turning round helps gives of the effect of wherever she is everyone is watching and we know there is some sort of production being shot as at the beginning of the whip pan we actually see the camera present in o

WHAT IS POST-MODERNISM Post-modernism can be described as a style and a concept in the arts characterised by a distrust of theories and ideologies and by the drawing of attention to conventions.  1. What is a hybrid media text? Mixing of existing genres with each other e.g. sci-fi and comedy. 2. What is meant by Bricolage?  The emergence of different aspects to create a finished product.  3. What is meant by simulation? CGI, mimicking reality, embedding itself with live action fantasy.  4. What is a disjointed narrative structure? Narrative of the story doesn't follow the normal structured pattern for example starting at the end and working your way backwards.  5.
